The Department of Regional Studies and History was established in 1994 and offers two majors: "Regional Studies" and "History". Academic programs cover the basic and advanced courses (lower and upper division courses). The Department arranges conferences on a regular basis, including the notable 37th International Congress of Orientalists (Moscow, 2004) held jointly with the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences.

Manuals and monographs are issued under the Department, and its faculty are constantly engaged in research.

The main lower division courses include History of Russia, World History, History of the Orient, Historiography and Social Studies. Upper division courses, designed to enhance professional competence, concern history, social and political systems of such countries as China, India, Japan, Arab and Southeast Asian countries. Courses on social mind and ideology in the regions of study - Ethnology and Ethnopsychology, History of World Religions and Oriental Mythology - are an indispensable part of the acadamic program.

Special courses aim to develop students’ practical skills. These include: Social and Cultural Feachers of Oriental Business Practice International Integration Processes and Organizations Regional and National Security Regional Conflicts in the Modern World Reforms in the Oriental Countries Oriental Countries: Traditions and Modern Trends.

Students are offered advanced courses in history, culture and business practices of the countries they study. Department’s graduates work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Embassies, commercial consulates and for the leading companies. Advanced knowledge in Regional Studies and History enables our graduates to successfully solve a range of practical issues in cooperation with Eastern partners, and make competent judgements on the issues of the social, political, cultural and economic development of Asia.
